October 7, 2025 — PayFoneMap was launched in September 2023 as a passion project with a singular goal: to map the remaining payphones across Canada and preserve a fading part of communication history.
Quickly realizing that payphones represent more than just old technology—they are symbols of connection and community—the project grew into a living map that documents not just the machines, but the human stories attached to them.
After nearly two years of community growth, PayFoneMap announced plans to expand globally on July 24, 2025, officially launching its first international map on August 14, 2025.
The project remains fiercely independent and community-driven, relying on the dedication of volunteers and operating with no corporate sponsorship or advertising. At its heart, PayFoneMap is a map of memories, keeping a universal piece of the past alive, one payphone at a time.
