PayFoneMap was launched in September 2023 as a passion project with a singular goal: to map the remaining payphones across Canada and preserve a fading part of communication history.
Quickly realizing that payphones represent more than just old technology—they are symbols of connection and community—the project grew into a living map that documents not just the machines, but the human stories attached to them.
After nearly two years of community growth, PayFoneMap announced plans to expand globally on July 24, 2025, officially launching its first international map on August 14, 2025.
The project remains fiercely independent and community-driven, relying on the dedication of volunteers and operating with no corporate sponsorship or advertising. At its heart, PayFoneMap is a map of memories, keeping a universal piece of the past alive, one payphone at a time.
Since our initial announcement of expanding our payphone mapping program from a national Canadian initiative to a global one, the summer of 2025 has been a period of incredible growth and discovery. Our dedicated team of mappers, fueled by the mission to document these public relics, has successfully gathered a wealth of data across diverse international landscapes. We've made significant inroads into the 🇺🇸 United States, charting the urban grids of rust-belt cities like Detroit, the unique Pacific Northwest character of Portland, and the cross-border gateway of Buffalo.
Our expansion didn't stop at the North American mainland, as we ventured into the vibrant streets of 🇲🇽 Mexico City, capturing the intricate network of its payphones. The program's reach has also extended to the unique 🇫🇷 French territories of Saint Pierre and Miquelon and the stunning, remote islands of French Polynesia, proving that no location is too far-flung for our project. Further south, we've collected valuable information from the bustling metropolis of 🇧🇷 São Paulo, Brazil, and from key 🇵🇷 Puerto Rican cities like San Juan and Ponce, each contributing a vital piece to our global mosaic.
This summer's data collection has not only expanded our database exponentially but has also provided a rich, detailed snapshot of the payphone's global status in the modern age.
Beginning this summer 2025, we will be continually expanding our locator maps across multiple cities, and across multiple provinces to map out our remaining payphones. Our extensive locator maps will include locations of payphone in airports, convenience stores, gas stations, shopping malls, grocery stores, public buildings, and etc. no matter where you are in Canada, we will have you covered finding the nearest payphone.
Over the next few months, we will be adding new locations to our maps and will be consistently updating them of future changes. We will also accept submissions from anyone who is interested in contributing to our project. We appreciate anyone who contributes to our project.
