Futel Phones

Futel operates a network of free community telephones that blend vintage telephony hardware with modern VoIP infrastructure. Each Futel phone functions as a working public access point — offering free calls, voicemail, and even connections to local social services — all built on open-source systems and volunteer effort.

Their mission is part social experiment, part preservation project: to keep the idea of public access to communication alive in a world where it’s mostly been privatized. Futel’s work parallels ours — maintaining and mapping the disappearing infrastructure of public telephony, one dial tone at a time.
